How to setup Steam Mulitplayer Server in Terraria

It is true that we’ve advised you to start playing in the classic mode. However, you may get bored playing online. Moreover, Terraria is basically a PvP game by nature. Thus, you may be interested in inviting your friends to play in your world to share the adventure. In this article, we will show you how to both host and join Terraria Servers through Steam Interface.

Establishing the Server

From the main menu go ‘Multiplayer’ then ‘Host & Play’.

  1. Select first the character and then the world in a second move (you can create new character and world if you want)
  2. Select the “Steam multiplayer mode”. You have two options in front of you which are Friends Only as well as Invite Only. You may select the Friends Only feature if you want your friends to join your world without restriction. But if you are too selective or introvert person, you better select Invite Only to select the friends you want to play with in your local world.
  3. You have now to Enter a password. Ps: You are not required to enter a password as you can leave it blank.
  4. The sever will start and you join your local world. All you have now to invite your friends.

How to invite your friends:

Now, we will show you how to invite your friends. It worth noting that these steps are only required if you select the Invite Only feature.

  1. Open up your inventory.
  2. Go to ‘Settings’ in the lower right corner.
  3. Click on the ‘Invite Friends’ button in the middle of the menu. This will open up the Steam overlay with a dialog showing your online friends.
  4. In the middle of the menu, you will find Invite Friends feature.
  5. After you select Invite only feature, look on the right for the invite button to invite all the friends you want to play with.
  6. Select “Return To Game” on the lower left of the dialog to go back to Terraria.

Joining a World

Follow the method below if you want to join a friends world or if you have received an invite.

This paragraph will help you if you are willing to enter a world of your friends or if you have received an invite

Joining a ‘Friends Only’ World

  1. Go to ‘Multiplayer’ > ‘Join via Steam’ from the title screen. This will directly guide you to the Steam overlay to the Friends dialog
  2. If this option is greyed out or not available, but they are running a server via Steam, then it is most likely to be on. Ask them to send you an invite and follow the steps in the next section.
  3. In the list, you will find your friend who invited you. Click the triangle beside their name and then select ‘Join Game’. However, problems may happen. Even though your friends are setting up a Steam server, you may find the option grey or unavailable. Thus, the server may be likely to run on ‘Invite Only’ mode. You have now to demand them to send you an invite and you jump to the next paragraph.
  4. Select a character to play or create a new one.
  5. You must ask your friend for the password. Once you have the password, enter it
  6. You will join at the traditional central spawn point in

    your friend’s local world, a message appears “[Player] has joined.”.

Joining an ‘Invite Only’ World

  1. A message “[Steam Name] has invited you to play Terraria” appears on the screen
  2. Go to the main title screen, and click on this notification. If the notification has expired, open the Steam overlay manually using the key combination If you do not see this invite, or you have accidentally cancelled it, ask your friend to send you a new one.
  3. Go ahead to the main menu and select the notification item. You should see an open chat window with the invite. Enter the key combination ‘Shift + Tab’ in case the notification expired. You should ask your friend to send a new invite in case you do not see an invite or you cancelled it.
  4. Click ‘Join Game’.
  5. Select a character to play or create a new one.
  6. You must ask your friend for the password. Once you have the password, enter it
  7. You will join at the traditional central spawn point into your friend’s local world, a message appears “[Player] has joined.”.
